Dress Rehearsal tomorrow at Thorne Hall

Tuesday, 5/9 is the dress rehearsal for the Spring Concert. 

Rehearsal will take place at Thorne Hall at Occidental College,
1600 Campus Rd in Eagle Rock. Click here for a map. 

Call time for ALL musicians is 4:15pm

Attendance at the Dress Rehearsal is mandatory in order to perform in the concert.
**Normal clothes should be worn to the dress rehearsal (concert dress is for the concert only).** No snacks allowed in the building.

  • String Orchestra is dismissed at 5pm
  • Youth Orchestra is dismissed at 6pm
  • Chamber Orchestra is dismissed at 7:25pm
*Please allow extra time for parking! * We have a limited amount of time to use the hall, so the dress rehearsal must start on time. Parking is on campus in the visitor lots or on the roads surrounding Thorne Hall. Late musicians should enter the building through the backstage entrance at the loading dock.

Parents,We need your help

We ask all parents to make a $$$ donation towards purchasing flowers for your child's sectional coach. This is VYMA's way of saying thank you for all their hard work! Bring donations to Sandi on Tuesday.

During the Dress Rehearsal, we need:

  • 2 parents to monitor the doors to the hall
  • 3 parents to chaperone musicians backstage

On the concert day, we need:

  • 3 parents to pass out programs at the doors
  • 2 parents to help sell raffle tickets before and during the concert 
  • 2 parents to help usher the musicians on stage during the concert (you would still get to watch the concert)
  • A photographer to take pictures during the sound check

Saturday, May 13th

Call time for ALL musicians is 1:30pm

 

Concert begins at 3pm and should end around 4:30pm

Concert dress for boys: 
white shirt
black tie (bow or straight)
black pants
black dress shoes

Concert dress for girls:
white top or sweater
black skirt, dress or pants
black dress shoes

Spring Retreat this Saturday, April 29

Our annual retreat is this coming Saturday, April 29 at Camp Bob Waldorf at Max Straus. The cost of the retreat is included in the VYMA tuition. If you have not yet registered, please contact Sandi to sign up.

What to bring:

  • Instrument
  • Music stand (NO STANDS WILL BE PROVIDED - please bring your own)
  • Pencil
  • Water
  • Snack (Lunch and dinner are provided by the camp)
  • Sweater
  • Tennis shoes
  • Sunblock and a hat
  • Swimsuit and towel

  • 10:30 - 12:00 Composing workshop in Kaufman Music & Art auditorium 
  • 12:00 – 1:00 Lunch
  • 1:00 – 2:00 1 hr orchestra rehearsals
  • 2:00 – 3:30 Scavenger Hunt or pool 
  • 3:30 – 4:30 Skit rehearsal 
  • 4:30 – 5:30 soccer game
  • 5:30  6:30 Dinner
  • 6:45 – 7:30 Skits
  • 7:45 – 9:30 Campfire (Smores and popcorn) Movie (Daddy Day Camp) at Fire circle
  • 9:30 PICK UP at Fire circle

Our retreat will take place on Saturday, April 29 at Camp Bob Waldorf at Max Straus, a local campground very close to our usual rehearsal space. (9am - 9pm for full day). The cost of the retreat is included in the VYMA tuition.

Pay tuition

If you have not done so already, please pay the spring tuition using our new easy online site (www.vyma.org) or bring check/cash to Sandi at rehearsal. One SO/YO semester is $430 for returning students, and $450 for new students (which includes a $20 audition fee). CO tuition is $300. Please be sure to take care of this as soon as possible to ensure VYMA can continue paying our wonderful coaches and rent on time. Thank you!

Park in the lot off Wabasso and enter the building through Fellowship Hall (the big room closest to the parking lot). There will be a sign in sheet inside. Be sure to sign in and out at every rehearsal. Please arrive 15 minutes early for your rehearsal so we can get started and make the best use of our time.

  • Youth Orchestra: 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm every Tuesday
  • String Orchestra: 5:30 pm to 7:15 pm every Tuesday
  • Chamber Orchestra: 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm every Tuesday

Violin give-away!

Our generous partners at the Awesome Music Foundation will be donating one new full size violin to a VYMA musician on Saturday, February 11 at 8 pm.

  • What are three ways you would benefit from this new violin? 
  • Do you currently own a violin? If no, who do you rent from?
  • Is your current violin the correct size for you?
  • Are you available at 8pm on February 11 to accept the violin? Presentation ceremony will be held in Downey

First rehearsal and new parent orientation this Tuesday!

Dear *|FNAME|*,

VYMA's spring semester begins very soon! We hope you will be prepared for VYMA's first rehearsal on Tuesday, Jan. 31st.  We ask that parents new to VYMA attend a short orientation this Tuesday at 5:30pm. Please RSVP to Sandi at vymacoordinator@gmail.com . Here are a few things to be aware of before we start:

Music will be printed and handed out to students at rehearsal!
If you are new to VYMA, you will be given a music binder. Returning students, please bring your binder from last semester. Be sure to keep track of your music binder and bring it to every rehearsal. In addition to the music binder, *|FNAME|* should bring a wire music stand and a pencil to every rehearsal. Please be sure label your binder and music stand with your musician's name.
